Sargassum at Galleon Beach (English Harbour): today's state

Today, October 30

Clear

Clean, hit it

Galleon Beach stretches 422 metres along English Harbour on Antigua's south coast, facing the moorings that made the bay famous. People arrive by dinghy from the anchorage as often as by road, drawn by water that usually stays flat.

The shoreline's state fits in the morning rating (0 to 5); the southern sector map locates the beach, and the bulletin never carries over from the day before. Within seconds you can see whether the sand is clean, whether clumps are drifting across the bay or whether a landing is taking hold.

What to know about this beach

Facing south-west, with its axis on 236 degrees, Galleon Beach sits on the Caribbean side, in a bay that Antigua's landmass shields at an angle from the easterly flow. Rafts driven by the trade winds track along the Atlantic front first, and only occasionally reach the mouth of English Harbour.

The beach opens towards the passage leading out to sea, so it keeps slightly more contact with southerly swell than Pigeon Point, tucked deep inside neighbouring Falmouth Harbour. When a tongue of weed slips through the entrance, Galleon Beach may take it first; the rest of the time the bay works as an effective shelter.

Frequently asked questions

Does Galleon Beach see much sargassum?

Rarely. English Harbour is sheltered at an angle from the easterly flow: rafts driven by the trades run along the Atlantic coast first, and few make it through the entrance. Episodes do happen, hence the daily rating.

Galleon or Pigeon Point: which is better protected?

Pigeon Point, buried at the back of Falmouth Harbour, is the more enclosed of the two. Galleon Beach, turned towards the English Harbour exit, keeps a little more contact with open water and can react first.

Should I check the beach before a day at anchor?

It is a useful habit: the 0 to 5 rating for the southern sector comes out every morning with the map. A few seconds tell you whether the bay stayed clear overnight or whether something is drifting in.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
