What to know about this beach
The shore at Hopkins points east-north-east, tilted slightly up the coast, taking the trade winds almost head on, midway between Dangriga to the north and the Placencia peninsula to the south. The barrier reef stands guard on the horizon, some twenty kilometres out, holding back a share of the rafts before they enter the inner waters.
That windward face makes Hopkins a useful barometer for the sector: once Tobacco Caye starts loading on the reef, the village is among the first mainland shores to meet the overflow. The length of the beach leaves room to manoeuvre, though, since deposits rarely settle everywhere at once and a few hundred metres often lead back to clean sand.
