Sargassum at Placencia Beach: today's conditions

Today, October 30

Moderate

Visible sargassum

Placencia closes out the peninsula that carries its name, at the very end of the sand spit dividing the Caribbean from the lagoon. The village, threaded by its famous pedestrian sidewalk, gathers most of the lodging, restaurants and tour departures of southern Belize.

Everything needed to decide is here before the towel goes down: a 0 to 5 rating recalculated at daybreak, a map setting Placencia among the peninsula's beaches, and the sector trend refreshed daily. Clean sand, rafts offshore or a landing underway: it reads in seconds.

What to know about this beach

The main beach lines the village's eastern face, open to the trades and pointed at the reef, which skims off part of the arrivals a good twenty kilometres out. At the tip of the peninsula, Placencia also feels currents bending around the point, which can shift a deposit from one stretch to another within hours.

Coming down the shoreline, the village follows Maya Beach and Seine Bight: the three beaches share the same episodes, and the morning map settles which one is faring best. On the west side, the lagoon stays out of the arrival corridor, screened by the sand spit itself.

Frequently asked questions

Does Placencia Beach get hit often?

It belongs to the peninsula's east-facing shores, exposed to the flow the trade winds carry. The reef offshore trims the arrivals; what gets through lands in episodes, mostly in season, hence the daily rating.

Does the rating cover the whole village beach?

It sums up the stretch and its sector. Over several kilometres of sand a deposit can stay local, so the map helps you see whether the north end or the village front is doing better.

How is it different from Maya Beach or Seine Bight?

All three face the same open water behind the same reef. The gaps come down to the day's currents and to the peninsula's tip, which can swing a deposit around the village.

Are trips to the cayes affected?

Part of the departures use the lagoon side, sheltered behind the peninsula. At sea, rafts can be steered around; check the morning rating to know how loaded the east face is before booking.

When does sargassum season peak in Placencia?

Caribbean arrivals generally crest between spring and late summer. The rest of the year episodes are scarce, and the 0 to 5 rating remains the simplest way to follow the real rhythm.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
