Sargassum at Playa Akumal: today's report from the bay

Today, September 1

Heavy

Shit's bad

Playa Akumal lines a shallow bay halfway between Xpu-Há and Tulum. Its Maya name refers to turtles, which graze the seagrass meadows lying a short swim from shore, inside the shelter of the reef that closes the bay.

This page gives the day's sargassum picture for that bay: a 0 to 5 rating covering what has landed on the sand and what is floating near the shallows, a map placing Akumal among the neighbouring beaches of the coast, and an update posted each morning. Handy when the plan for the day involves a mask and fins.

What to know about this beach

Akumal opens east, yet the bay is not fully exposed: a reef runs close to shore and breaks the swell before it reaches the sand. That coral sill acts as a filter for sargassum. Some rafts stall outside it, while others cross the barrier at high tide or when the wind pushes hard from the east.

Whatever gets in then moves slowly through shallow, sheltered water. Weed can hover above the seagrass beds where the turtles feed, and as it breaks down it clouds the water longer than on an open shore. A calm morning after an episode does not automatically mean clear water inside the reef, which is why the daily rating and the map are worth comparing with the open beaches nearby.

Frequently asked questions

Does the reef keep sargassum out of Akumal Bay?

Only partly. It stops a share of the rafts offshore and softens the swell, but at high tide or in a strong easterly the weed passes over the barrier and then sits inside the bay.

Can sargassum affect snorkelling with the turtles?

It can. Floating weed and its decomposition cut visibility over the seagrass where the turtles graze. Checking the day's rating before booking a guided snorkel gives you a realistic idea of conditions.

How do I check the bay before arriving?

The FanGass map gives Akumal a 0 to 5 rating every morning, from clear sand to a heavy landing. Look at it the same day, since one morning can differ sharply from the next.

Does Akumal clear as fast as the open beaches?

Rarely. Water circulates more slowly behind the reef, so weed that made it inside can linger longer than at Xpu-Há or Playacar, even once the open sea has settled again.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
