Sargassum at Playa Palancar (Cozumel): conditions this morning

Today, September 1

Clear

Clean, go for it

Playa Palancar lines the southwest shore of Cozumel, the Quintana Roo island separated from the mainland by a channel some twenty kilometres wide. It sits opposite Palancar Reef, one of the best known dive sites in the Mesoamerican system, and faces southwest, on the sheltered side of the island.

This page pulls together the sargassum picture: what was recorded at Playa Palancar this morning, a 0 to 5 rating, and the Riviera Maya map with the other beaches we follow. All of it is refreshed each morning, before the first crossings of the day.

What to know about this beach

That southwest aspect puts Playa Palancar on Cozumel's leeward front. The trade winds blow from the east, and the island itself acts as the screen: most rafts carried along by the current strand on the undeveloped eastern shore before they ever reach this side. That is the underlying reason the western coast is generally less affected than the mainland.

Two qualifications follow. Palancar lies in the southern part of that front, close to the island's southern tip, so weed that wraps around the point works its way up this stretch first. And the reef offshore reshapes the coastal currents, which can concentrate in one spot whatever did make it past the headland.

Frequently asked questions

Is Playa Palancar spared from sargassum?

It is less exposed than the mainland because the island blocks arrivals coming from the east. Less exposed is not immune: weed sometimes rounds the southern tip and tracks along this shore.

How do I check before taking the ferry from Playa del Carmen?

Open the FanGass map in the morning, before you board. It carries a 0 to 5 rating for Playa Palancar along with the observed conditions, updated every day.

Why is Cozumel's east coast so different?

It takes wind and swell head on and collects the landings. The west coast, Palancar included, sits behind the island relative to the path the rafts travel.

Does the reef make a difference to seaweed?

Palancar Reef lies well offshore, at a distance from the sand. It does not block weed that has rounded the southern point: what it changes is the currents spreading it along the beach.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
