What to know about this beach
Nothing shields this stretch. San Martín runs almost straight, faces due east and meets the open Caribbean head on. Cozumel's windward coast takes the trade winds and the offshore swell full in the face, and that is exactly the mechanism that carries sargassum rafts ashore. The sand shelves steeply, the break is often lively, and the water bears little resemblance to the flat channel side of the island.
That exposure cuts both ways. With no rock point or lagoon to trap material, what lands here is also picked up by the surf and redistributed along the beach. Conditions can therefore change from one day to the next, sometimes within a tide, whereas the leeward western shore tends to vary less.
