Playa Xpu-Há is a long, open ribbon of sand between Puerto Aventuras and Akumal on the Caribbean side of the Riviera Maya. Several numbered entrances off Highway 307 lead to it, each dropping you on a different stretch of the same bay.

What to know about this beach
Xpu-Há faces southeast, a slightly different angle from the mostly east-facing beaches around it. Easterly trade winds therefore hit the shore obliquely: instead of pressing rafts square against the sand, they also push them sideways along the coast. Deposits end up spread unevenly, piling against the rocky points and at the ends of the bay while the middle stays lighter.
The second feature is how open it is. No breakwater, no enclosing headland, nothing to hold material once the wind eases. Xpu-Há can load up quickly during an episode, but it also flushes faster than the pocket bays nearby. Two entrances a kilometre apart can look genuinely different on the same morning, which is why a single town-level reading is not much help here.

Not consistently. Its southeast orientation takes the trade winds at an angle, so weed is spread along the bay rather than pinned in one block. How much lands varies from one entrance to the next.
Why do the entrances look so different?
The oblique wind drives floating weed sideways along the shore. It gathers at the ends of the bay and against the rocky points, while the central stretch of sand often stays comparatively clear.
How do I check before driving down Highway 307?

Does the beach clear quickly after an episode?
Usually faster than the enclosed coves nearby, since nothing traps material on this open shore. Wind and swell take it back once the episode fades, though the pace depends on each arrival.
