Sargassum at Balneario Caña Gorda (Guánica): today's conditions

Today, September 1

First bulletin for this beach lands with tomorrow morning’s update.

Balneario Caña Gorda runs along a wide strip of sand south of Guánica, on Puerto Rico's Caribbean coast. Like every balneario on the island, it is a public beach with facilities, which makes it a landmark of the south shore. This page gives you the sargassum situation for the day, summed up in a 0 to 5 rating.

The map puts Caña Gorda in context among the beaches between Ponce and Lajas, and the morning update lets you decide before loading the car. The reading covers this beach itself, so you are not guessing from what someone saw elsewhere along the coast.

What to know about this beach

Guánica lies in the dry belt of southern Puerto Rico. The Cordillera Central splits the island and strips the moisture out of the trade winds before they reach this shore. That same ridge weakens the easterly flow which, further north and east, drives sargassum straight onto the sand. Facing due south, Balneario Caña Gorda mostly receives what the coastal current carries from east to west.

The bay here is broad and shallow, with cays and mangrove islets sitting offshore. They work both ways: they break up part of the drift before it reaches the beach, but mats that do get past tend to settle in the calm inner corner of the bay. When the wind swings around to the south, material piles onto the sand faster.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Caña Gorda usually get less sargassum than the east coast?

It opens due south on the leeward side, and the Cordillera Central weakens the easterly flow that carries the rafts. Whatever reaches this beach has first travelled around the island or drifted west along the south shore.

How can I tell if the beach is clear on the day I visit?

Check the 0 to 5 rating published here every morning, next to the map. It describes Caña Gorda itself rather than Guánica as a whole, and takes seconds to read before you set off.

Does wind direction change conditions at Caña Gorda?

Yes. An east-southeast flow runs along the coast and pushes mats westward, while a southerly wind sends them onto the beach and speeds up build-up in the sheltered inner part of the bay.

Which nearby beaches should I compare it with?

Playa Santa, further west in the same municipality, and Playa Rosada at La Parguera both appear on the map. They face different directions, so their daily ratings often differ.

Methodology & transparency — FanGass is a free service published by the Katchak agency and created by Morgan Haillus. Every morning, each beach’s 0-to-5 score is recomputed by cross-checking official bulletins (Météo-France, NOAA, University of South Florida), satellite imagery of the offshore rafts, and on-the-ground user reports.
