What to know about this beach
Orientation matters as much as which coast you are on. Playa Santa looks southwest, almost the opposite of the trade-wind flow that carries sargassum in from the Atlantic. To reach it, a mat first has to round the southern tip of Puerto Rico, then track along a shoreline already sheltered by the dry Guánica coast.
The flip side is how gentle the water is. The bay is shallow and lightly stirred, so a mat that drifts into the cove does not leave easily: it settles into the most enclosed corner. A southerly blow, or the less frequent long swell out of the southwest, is also enough to push floating material back onto the sand.
