La Chiva faces south, on the leeward coast of Vieques. Easterly trades push their arrivals onto the exposed sides of the archipelago, and this beach sits behind the island. It still lies on the path of weed that has rounded the eastern point and works back down along the southern shoreline.
Its length is the decisive detail. Over more than a kilometre the coast alternates rocky points and sandy pockets, and a small cay offshore bends the current on its way in. Deposits are rarely spread evenly as a result: one access can be blocked with weed while another, a few hundred metres along, is close to clear. Reading the shoreline as a single unit gives a poor picture of what you will actually find there.
