What to know about this beach
Media Luna faces south, on the leeward side of Vieques. Easterly trade winds hit the exposed coasts of the archipelago first, so this cove rarely takes an arrival head-on. Weed reaches it by a slower route: material that has rounded the eastern end of the island works west along the south coast and turns in with the coastal current.
What really defines this beach is low water energy. The cove is shallow, protected and almost waveless, so once sargassum settles in, the sea does not pull it back out quickly, and a deposit can stay visible longer than on a surf-washed shore.
