Sargassum at Playa Sun Bay (Vieques): today's report
First bulletin for this beach lands with tomorrow morning’s update.
Playa Sun Bay runs as a long palm-backed crescent on the south coast of Vieques, just east of Esperanza. It is the island's main public balneario and one of its busiest stretches of sand. This page handles the sargassum side: today's condition at Playa Sun Bay, a 0 to 5 rating and a map.
Everything is rebuilt each morning, so what you read is the state of the shoreline now rather than a general impression of the season. When weed does come in, the map shows which part of the bay it reached, which matters a great deal on a beach this long.

What to know about this beach
Sun Bay opens due south, on the Caribbean side of Vieques. This is the leeward coast: the trade winds blow from the east and drive sargassum rafts onto the exposed shores, while a bay facing this way usually avoids the head-on hit. That is an advantage, not immunity. Some material rounds the eastern tip of the island and then drifts west along the south coast, and it can settle here.
The shape of the bay matters too. A wide, shallow, south-facing crescent lets small waves do gentle work: weed that gets in tends to strand high on the sand rather than wash back out. Vieques also sits among the easternmost lands of Puerto Rico, so it meets Atlantic drift before the main island does.
Frequently asked questions
Is Playa Sun Bay sheltered from sargassum?
Its south-facing position on the leeward coast keeps it off the direct trade wind line. Even so, some weed rounds the eastern end of Vieques and drifts west along this shore before coming in.
How do I check Sun Bay before heading over?
The FanGass map updates every morning with a 0 to 5 rating for Playa Sun Bay and the section of the crescent affected. A quick look before you load the car is usually all it takes.
Which months bring the most weed to Vieques?
The busiest window normally runs from spring into late summer, often May through August. The rest of the year is quieter, although an isolated landing outside that stretch is always possible.
What are the fallback beaches from Esperanza?
Playa Media Luna sits just east, and Playa Caracas lies further along inside the wildlife refuge. Both face south but occupy different coves, so their daily ratings do not always match.
